CRAB Folks, it is really the silly season out there, time for everyone to be on their toes.  Take extra time to look around before launching.  Make sure you are out of other boat's way when waiting to land.  And take a good look when rowing, not only at your own course, but alert others of potential hazards.  Visitors to the river mean that there are lots of folks who think the Head of the Charles course is the way the river should be rowed for a practice piece - and we might have a few home grown folks with the same idea.  If you see someone cutting the corner too tight, say so.  If you see someone not hugging the shore tightly on the big turn, call out to them.  It takes a village to run a river so everyone, help out. Upcoming Events:  October 17and 18 Head of the Charles Regatta, Head of the Charles Course (BU Boathouse to the marker, about 10 strokes past the wooden boardwalk at Herter Park).  Thousands of rowers, hundreds of thousands of spectators, fun had by all. Saturday, October 31 Riverside Boat Club's Peanut Butter Cup Regatta.  Time and Course TBA (the course is weather dependent.  They'll run it from the boathouse to Mass Ave if the weather is good, from the boathouse to Newell Boathouse, upstream of Anderson Bridge, if not).  Don't let the costumes fool you, there are Reeses Peanute Butter Cups for prizes and the racing is fierce.  Beware of lightweights. Sunday, November 7 9:00AM.  CRI's Halloween Regatta.  From the HOCR Finish Line (at the marker about 10 strokes past the wooden boardwalk at Herter Park) to the 3rd dock at CRI. Saturday, November 14, 2015 9:00AM.  Women's Foot of the Charles.  Varsity 8's race first, from Mass Ave Bridge to the Head of the Charles finish line (at the marker about 10 strokes past the wooden boardwalk at Herter Park).  4's and novices race from Riverside to the HOCR finish.  Last set of races should go off around 9:40AM. Sunday, November 15, 2015 8:00AM, Men's Foot of the Charles.  MIT's Newell Boathouse (upstream of the Mass Ave Bridge) to Newell Boathouse (upstream of Anderson Bridge.  Takes about an hour. How could I forget?  

The tripple octuple....tri octuple... octuple(3).... ok, that sculling boat that seats 24 plus cox will also be on the Charles Saturday, post HOK, pretty much all day.

and confirmed, CRI is extending the scary season.  The Halloween Regatta is on November 7.  Sorry to doubt them since they are really good about posting their events.

Sunday, October 11, 2015 Noon.  Head of the Quinnobequin Youth Singles Regatta.  Eliot Bridge to North Beacon St. Bridge.  Expect 120+ kids all in singles, between 11 and 18 years of age.  Canoe/Kayakers in Brighton are asked to launch heading downstream until the course clears.  Powerboaters are asked to NOT travel the course during the race (approximately Noon to 1:00PM).  Also expect these kids to be launching from various boathouses from around 11:00AM, and heading back after about 1:00PM and as late as 2:00PM.  Impressive event, come spectate! October 17/18 All Day.  Head of the Charles Regatta.  Thousands of rowers, hundreds of thousands of spectators.  Fun had by all. Minor correction - the Sunday, Oct 4, 2015 11:00AM Greater Boston Youth Rowing Head Race between BC High and CRI Boys will take place on the Head of the Charles course, BU Boathouse to 10 strokes past the wooden boardwalk at Herter Park.

And, The Stampfli 24 Person (plus cox'n) sculling boat (yup, it's like 3 eights put together with twice as many oars each) will be launching hourly out of Riverside Boat Club post Head of the Kevin III on Saturday, October 10, 2015 starting at about 10AM.  It may also go for a paddle from CRI after the Head of the Q on October 11.  Please keep your eyes open and steer clear.

All the news from the Clean Up Boat is good.  In fact, 2015 is turning out to be another great year for the Clean Up Boat.  The weather , for the most part has been pleasant and we have been able to follow the schedule with few interruptions.  The one notable exception is Jonathan Burke and his family.  They were rained out twice.  We will get them out for sure in 2016.

We had the expected clean up after the 4th of July celebration, but it only took us a couple of trips, and we had the Charles back in "mid season" form. 

The volunteers are outstanding.  Always on time, with great attitudes and ready for a productive day on the river.

Funding looks good.  Most of our financial support comes from a loyal and dedicated group of supporters who help us year after year.    We are not fully funded for 2015 yet, but we believe if  all of the expected, remaining donations, materialize, we will be whole for 2015.  Of course no unexpected expenses have occurred, and that always helps in balancing the budget. One exception, the hail storm putting a few holes in the Bimini top.

The boat has preformed well.  This is the 5th year for the current motor.  In the past we have replaced it after 5 years.  But, this one seems solid so we have decided to go with it in 2016.

Renata von Tscharner, of the Charles River Conservancy, is working with Google Earth to add a portion of the Charles to their data base.  The Clean Up Boat has agreed to help with the filming of  the on river views.  If all goes well, it should be done this Fall.

There will be a few more great weeks of New England weather coming up.  If you are not a regular visitor to the Charles, make a special effort to spend a couple of hours enjoying the beautiful "jewel" we have in the middle of our home metropolitan area.

(CRAB) Fall traffic changes and CR race schedule

CRAB Folks, as you know, there was an issue with sediment build up under Anderson Bridge, likely caused by a recent water main break on the bridge, that resulted in a dangerous obstruction that damaged a few singles and acted as speed bump for many more.  While CRAB may seem all-knowing, that is only true when you tell us what is going on.  Because we got word of this hazard quickly, we were able to work with the good folks at MassDOT who responded quickly. If you see something, say something.  Complaining on the dock does no good.   Contents What does Riverside's new Dock mean for you? Upcoming Events 1. What does Riverside's new Dock mean for you?  As you may know, Riverside Boat Club had to replace their dock after a nasty winter that basically ripped the porch off the boathouse.  The new dock required the addition of pilings which changed the position of their dock in the river.  Why does this matter to you?  Because YOU now have to row the river a little bit differently. Upstream bound folks have less room between the dock and the center line. Those of you who like to cut that corner close to dock need to take a good look, or you may find yourself beached.  Those of you who like to give Riverside a wide berth may find yourself over the center line, nose to nose with oncoming traffic. Downstream bound folks also need to pay attention. Those of you who think that there is a 1000m straightaway tend to cross the center line, which has always been a bad idea, but that issue will now be exaserbated.  You need to make a course correction by the time you get to the shrubbery at the end of the retaining wall and stay more toward Boston.  Who, me?  yes, you! Side by side boats need to be particularly careful of where you are and especially when without a coach. Riverside's docks can get congested at peak times and they are stongly asking their membership to stay tucked into the shadow of the dock when waiting for a spot to land.  But safety is everyone's business so lets all get used to this change together.  If you see a problem that needs to be addressed, send a note to CharlesRiverAllianceofBoaters@gmail.com and we'll talk to whatever program was involved.   2. Upcoming Events Fall Calendar LABOR DAY ROWING TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGE.   Monday, September 7.  The traffic pattern changes in the Powerhouse   (*) Powerhouse Stretch / Western Ave. and River Street Bridges: This area is used heavily by crews racing side-by-side, for high school and club races, and seat racing. Racing crews and scullers have right of way in this stretch. All crews and scullers, upstream and downstream, must use the right-hand arches of both bridges, going single file if not racing. The center arches are two-way to accommodate racing, with one boat in the right-hand arch, and the other to the right-hand side of the center arch. (*) Racing crews and scullers are only allowed to use the center arches if the right hand arches are concurrently used, and preferably with a coach. From Labor All Day through Thanksgiving, from 5 am until 1 pm, the center arches of Western and River street bridges are upstream only, to accommodate crews and scullers training for the Head of the Charles regatta. After 1pm the center arches resume being bi-directional. April 2010 Charles River Rowing Traffic Pattern Note that both ends of the race course cross just onto the wrong side of the river. Crews turning shall proceed well into the corners at the Weeks Footbridge (Cambridge) and the Railroad Tracks (Boston), being alert for and notifying approaching crews. Coaches are urged to choose their time openings carefully and proceed expeditiously Saturday, September 12, 2015.   7:00AM  - 8:00AM  Heads of the Kevin I.  Head of the Charles Course (BU Boathouse to about 10 strokes past the wooden boardwalk at Herter Park).  this is a Riverside Club event and other folks are asked to not jump into the race.  They try to keep the numbers down to manageable, and uninvited guests messes up the timing. Saturday September 12, 2015.
