| Heads up! Event coming Sunday, April 10th. Riverside's Crusher Casey Stake Race - Eights Race going off the line at 9:45AM and the Singles going off at 9:55AM. This should avoide the college racing traffic, but college coaches, please note this on your calendars and watch out for big and small boats rounding a stake at "high" speed. The race course is either Riverside to Mass Ave and back, or Riverside to Newell Boathouse and back, weather depending. Steve "Crusher" Casey was a wrestler, boxer and rower that was nationally ranked in Ireland, England and the USA. Originally from Sneem, Kerry, Ireland, he and 2 of his 6 siblings were members of Riverside Boat Club where they were instrumental in bringing local and national attention to the sport in the 1930's and 1940's. Riverside honors his athletic prowess with a stake race each spring where the male and female winner get their name engraved on a trophy in the shape of a wrestling belt. Cox'ns of the winning eight get their name engraved on a plaque that includes a London Policeman's "Bobby" hat, a gift to the club from Steve Casey's great nephew. In the event of a tie, the organizers threaten to settle with one of the other sporting disciplines. Spectators are welcome.
