Spring has sprung!  Which means, lots more boats on the River.  Lots more rowers, lots more sailors, lots more power boaters and lots more canoe/kayak and paddle boarders.  Keep your eyes peeled and don't be afraid to shout out if you see a dangerous situation developing.
As a kind reminder, please remember that YOUR traffic pattern is not THE traffic pattern of the River.  Coast Guard rules govern all, but the rowers use a more stringent pattern, dictating which arch to use in which direction.  They do this to better separate rowing shells moving in opposite directions.  But keep in mind that just because YOU use the center arch of Eliot as upstream only does not mean that Powerboaters use it that way too.  Powerboaters follow a channel and they use the arches designated with the navigational lights.  Which means, that at the BU Bridge, they are using the arch closest to Boston.  So rowers!  Best to keep your eyes open at all bridges for power boats coming the other way.  And, the sailors can travel in a straight line, but very likely not the straight line that you are on.  It isn't their fault, it is the way they work.  Give the sailors a wide berth.  For more info and tips on how to deal with boat types unlike your own, visit www.CharlesRiverAllianceofBoater s.org

Other really good things to keep in mind:
  • Power boats in their slips can get damaged by the wake of a coaching launch.  Please consider the wake that you throw when passing in front of one of the four yacht clubs on the river.
  • There are alot of novices on this river...in singles, canoes, sailboats, paddleboards, eights, and even power boats.  Be kind to them, and talk to them if you think they aren't sure what they (or you) are doing.
  • Singles and other rowing shells are sometimes on the dock unattended while the rower runs up to open a door, lower a rack, or make an emergency bathroom run.... and wake can really damage those boats too.  Use caution when passing rowing clubs.
Happy spring everyone.  Now keep your eyes open and watch out for the boats around you.

Sorry for the late notice this week.  Super busy at work, and will be for the next 3 or 4 weeks.  So feel free to remind me when you don't get a CRAB update by Thursday.
Real quick - we have had a few close calls with visiting crews using wrong arches, and some more novice crews doing things that novice crews do.  I haven't been able to address them individually.  Please, everyone make sure that everyone launching from your house understands the basics of the traffic pattern AND the current construction situation at Anderson and Longfellow.  And if you see someone doing something wrong, take the time to politely let them know.  Communication is the key.  It takes a village, people.  Thanks for being part of it.

First, a few quick reminders:

If you are hosting a crew visiting the River, whether for college racing, a run down the HOCR course, or for a poker run, please take the time to prep visitors for the Charles River boating environment.  We are far busier than most other bodies of water, and even when you warn folks, evidence would suggest that they don't really take it to heart.  Please make sure that they understand the consequences of not using caution and following the established traffic pattern.  College crews (and club's that host visiting crews) are especially asked to take care with this task.

We'd also like to remind folks to please, be aware of your surroundings.  The good folks of Cambridge Boat Club were thankfully aware this morning, and spotted an individual in need of their help.  Hats off to them for taking the time to lend a hand.  But in years past, other incidents including some lewd behavior has taken place on the banks, and boat clubs have been robbed.  Please keep your eyes open.  Get a waterproof case for your cellphone so that you can alert the authorities should you witness something take place.  We all like to be able to focus on our water time, but sometimes, we have to put that aside and help.

Racing Calendar

Saturday, April 9
  • 7:00AM - 10:45AM.  College Racing on the 2k course (Longfellow Bridge to finish line posts below the BU Boathouses).  NU Women v. Columbia, MIT Ltwt Men, NU Men v. BU are all racing.
  • 2:00PM to 3:30PM.  Belmont Hill v. Deerfiled scrimmage.  Course?  Likely on the Powerhouse Stretch (Weeks Bridge to the Powder Magazine at Magazine Beach).
  • 3:30PM - 5:30PM.  Mayor's Cup (CRLS v. BB&N) on the Powerhouse Stretch (Weeks Bridge to the Powder Magazine at Magazine Beach).
  • No formal Sailing races, but keep your eyes open for practices.  Also note that Community Boating is open for business so novices will be on the River.
Sunday, April 10
  • 7:30AM to 8:45AM.  College Racing on the 2k course (Longfellow Bridget to finish line posts below the BU Boathouses).  Harvard Ltwt Men v. Georgetown.
  • 9:30AM to 10:15AM.  Crusher Casey Stake Race.  Riverside Boat Club event that runs EITHER from RBC docks, downstream of Mass Ave, around a stake and back OR from RBC docks, upstream to Newell Boathouse above Anderson Bridge, around a stake and back.  Course is weather dependent.
  • No formal Sailing races, but keep your eyes open for practices.  Also note that Community Boating is open for business so novices will be on the River.
Wednesday, April 13
  • 4PM.  Brookline v. BC High and Fairfield Prep on the 2k course (Longfellow Bridge to finish posts downstream of the BU Boathouses).
  • 4:30PM to 6:30PM.  CRLS v. Milton High School on the Powerhouse (Weeks Bridge to Powder Magazine at Magazine Beach.

Sunday, April 3, 2018

8:30AM - 9:30AM.  College racing on the 2k course (start line above Longfellow Bridge to finish line below teh BU Boathouse).  Wellesley v. Smith, UNH, Simmons (4 races).
10:00AM - 3:00PM.  Sailing races on courses both upstream AND downstream of the Mass Ave Bridge.  The courses must be clear of other boats by 10:00AM firm to accomodate LOTS of racing.

Heads up! Event coming

Sunday, April 10th.  Riverside's Crusher Casey Stake Race - Eights Race going off the line at 9:45AM and the Singles going off at 9:55AM.  This should avoide the college racing traffic, but college coaches, please note this on your calendars and watch out for big and small boats rounding a stake at "high" speed.  The race course is either Riverside to Mass Ave and back, or Riverside to Newell Boathouse and back, weather depending.
Steve "Crusher" Casey was a wrestler, boxer and rower that was nationally ranked in Ireland, England and the USA.  Originally from Sneem, Kerry, Ireland, he and 2 of his 6 siblings were members of Riverside Boat Club where they were instrumental in bringing local and national attention to the sport in the 1930's and 1940's.  Riverside honors his athletic prowess with a stake race each spring where the male and female winner get their name engraved on a trophy in the shape of a wrestling belt.  Cox'ns of the winning eight get their name engraved on a plaque that includes a London Policeman's "Bobby" hat, a gift to the club from Steve Casey's great nephew.  In the event of a tie, the organizers threaten to settle with one of the other sporting disciplines.  Spectators are welcome.

Hello Sports fans!!  Formal racing is up and running.  Please be sure to be aware of what is happening before you venture out.  Powerboaters are encouraged to check out the Powerboating page on the CRAB website to get some helpful tips for navigating around rowing shells and sail boats.  Rowers should check out their page as well to figure out how to recognize a sailing race and how to avoid ending up in the wrong place.
Everyone is encouraged to review the traffic pattern and remember that the rowing traffic pattern is NOT the pattern that the Power Boaters use...it is the traffic pattern that the rowers use to more safety organize themselves.  It is more restrictive than Coast Guard regulations.  Powerboaters follow the Coast Guard Regs which allows them to use arches in different ways.  For example, rowers use the center arch at Weeks as upstream only to avoid head on collissions on a tricky corner - but Power Boaters have to use that arch bi-directionally.  Courtesy is always the best option when dealing with other boats.  So lets brush up on our information, commit to best behavior and have a safe season.

We need help from a Sailor!  If someone in the sailing community wants to send me details on their races (like in which section of the river they are happening, and maybe the participants, I'll happily include it.

Sailors need help from everyone else.  Folks are cautioned to remember that even when there aren't sailing races, there are still plenty of sailors practicing.

Dredging Complete - the River is open but USE CAUTION

All,

The dredging is complete and equipment is no longer blocking the river.  However, they are still removing it from the river, so if you MUST row between Eliot and North Beacon, keep your eyes open and stay out from shore (which of course means that you also need to look for boats coming at you doing the same thing).

Or, play it safe and stay out of that area if you can, and give them a few more days to clear out.

Hello All,
Dredging on the sandbar begins tomorrow.  For any intrepid boaters out there who may want to row in the open areas on the river (likely to not be open after this weekend), please avoid the area above Weeks because:
  • The dredging will require a barge and it will move.  It is pretty narrow up there so best not to be around it.
  • Once it starts sucking up debris, it does not stop until it is done.  It runs 24 hours a day, and should be done by the end of the weekend (weather permitting).
  • There is a pipe that will run along the Boston shore from the dredge site through the Boston arch of Arsenal Bridge (blocking the Boston Arch) to Herter park parking lot where the debris will be 'dewatered'.
So again, avoid the area, please.

FYI, the contractor has put quite a bit (like a foot or more) of sandy material down on the big parking lot at Herter, next to the playground.  It is covered with a membrane and the debris will be spread across that to dewater.  It will be hauled away from there.  Expect that parking lot to be unusable until April.

We should send a letter from CRAB to the Governor thanking him, Secretary Matt Beaton and dcr Commissioner Roy for this work.  If you have any suggestions about content, get them to me quickly please.  Send to CharlesRiverAllianceofBoaters@gm ail.com

Public Meeting to discuss CRAB-MIT Partnership to map the Charles River

CRAB Members and other members of the Charles River Community,

In an email in mid-November, we announced the formation of a partnership between CRAB and MIT to develop a depth chart of the Charles River.  Details of this announcement can be found at http://www.charlesriverallianceofboaters.org/chart.html.  MIT has conducted several feasibility measurements that have clearly shown that we can accurately measure the depth of the river along its length and width.

We would like to invite you to attend a meeting to learn about and discuss this effort on Wednesday, January 20, at 7:00 pm, at the MIT Sea Grant College Program.  The meeting will be held in a conference room on the third floor of Building E38.  This building is conveniently located next to the entrance of inbound Kendall/MIT MBTA station.  Parking can also be easily found in the area at parking garages or the street.

A presentation will be given that will outline our plans to gather data and make it available to the public.  There will be ample opportunity to ask questions and express your interest.

If you are planning to attend, please RSVP here.

Traffic pattern ALERT, Boston Arch closure on Anderson.

All,

see the note below alerting us to a Boston Arch closure on Monday.  Eyes open on monday to avoid moving barges, and use the center arch for down stream only traffic until the Boston arch opens again.

and, for those of you who asked, the updated time line for the Anderson Bridge Project, I have been told this:

The job completion date is June 17, 2016.  We most likely will still have some planting and punch list work to complete but we should have no more on the water work after that date.

Let the crowds rejoice.

Fw: Charles River Clean Up Boat - Update 15-4

On Thursday, December 3, 2015 5:11 PM, Tom McNichol <cleanupboat@yahoo.com> wrote:

Charles River Clean Up Boat - Update 15-4

This was a great year for the Clean Up Boat.  Out of the 12 years that we have cleaned the river, this was the best.  Other than a few days at the beginning of the season, and about a week after the 4th of July, the Charles way free of floating trash and debris.  We were effective and efficient, and the good weather helped a great deal.  Other than Jonathan Burke, and his family, who missed 2 days because of bad weather, most people went as scheduled.  One of the captains did not miss a day.  And the others missed few.

We have found that if you schedule the boat to go 4 times a week, you can keep the river looking good.  You know in advance, that you will miss some days because of weather,  but that is anticipated in the 4 day a week schedule.  Also, is the past, occasionally 2 captains would not be able to go in the same week.  But that does not create gaps anymore as we now have a 5th captain.  Jim Jadul has joined us and does a great job.

Tom Soisson and Bob Gaffney have been with the Clean Up Boat from the beginning, 12 years, and Mitch Lunin, the rookie, has been with us for about 10 years.  I guess Jim is now the rookie.  Anyways, these men are great people and responsible for much of our success.

Once more we have to say thanks to Nancy Free and Joann Thelusma for doing a superior job of keeping the schedule straight.

This brings us to the volunteers.  There has never been a more enthusiastic, pleasant, and dedicated group of people.  They always show up on time.  Despite our efforts to only go in good weather, on rare occasion we get caught in bad weather.  Even when threatened with rain, and this year hail, there are no complaints.

We had no unexpected expenses in 2015.  The hail storm punched holes n the Bimini top, but it was held together with duct tape and in serious need of replacement.  A couple of our financial supporters either reduced their donations, or did not donate, yet, so we are a little short.  This is my error, as I need to do a better job of raising funds in 2016.  Deb Howe has done a wonderful job and I need to get her some help. Oh yes, we will operate again next year.  Actually looking ahead, our current outboard motor has been used for 5years and we plan to use it again next year.  Our last motor was replaced after 5 years.  When it is time for the boat to go it has to be ready.  People plan their vacation time to help us and it is unacceptable to have a malfunctioning boat interfere with their day on the river.  We need to figure out how to pay for a new motor next year, in addition to covering operating costs.

I just reread the above paragraph and I want to make sure the dozens of financial supporters know we appreciate all you have done for the past 12 years.  Many of our donors have donated every year since we have started.  We do list our donors on our web site, and the years they have donated.  No one has a more loyal support group.

A couple of months ago the Charles River Conservancy worked with Google Earth to film the Charles from the Zakim Bridge to the Watertown Dam.  The Clean Up Boat helped by providing the transportation for the camera.  Soon the film will be on the "street view " portion of Google Earth.  The Conservancy is having an event on Dec 10 that includes the "premier"showing of this film.  The tickets are $250. You can get the details at their web site...www.thecharles.org.

Another activity that we will help with in 2016 is the charting of the Charles River depths from the locks to Watertown.  A number of details on this project have to be worked out.  I will learn more in the spring.

Summer, and most of Fall has gone.  The days are getting chilly.  You are an integral part of a group of concerned people who value the gem we have in the middle of our city.  Take a moment, pat yourself on the back, and reflect on what you have accomplished.  And, better yet, take a brief walk down by the Charles.

See you in the Spring,

Tom
