Spring has sprung!  Which means, lots more boats on the River.  Lots more rowers, lots more sailors, lots more power boaters and lots more canoe/kayak and paddle boarders.  Keep your eyes peeled and don't be afraid to shout out if you see a dangerous situation developing.
As a kind reminder, please remember that YOUR traffic pattern is not THE traffic pattern of the River.  Coast Guard rules govern all, but the rowers use a more stringent pattern, dictating which arch to use in which direction.  They do this to better separate rowing shells moving in opposite directions.  But keep in mind that just because YOU use the center arch of Eliot as upstream only does not mean that Powerboaters use it that way too.  Powerboaters follow a channel and they use the arches designated with the navigational lights.  Which means, that at the BU Bridge, they are using the arch closest to Boston.  So rowers!  Best to keep your eyes open at all bridges for power boats coming the other way.  And, the sailors can travel in a straight line, but very likely not the straight line that you are on.  It isn't their fault, it is the way they work.  Give the sailors a wide berth.  For more info and tips on how to deal with boat types unlike your own, visit www.CharlesRiverAllianceofBoater s.org

Other really good things to keep in mind:
  • Power boats in their slips can get damaged by the wake of a coaching launch.  Please consider the wake that you throw when passing in front of one of the four yacht clubs on the river.
  • There are alot of novices on this river...in singles, canoes, sailboats, paddleboards, eights, and even power boats.  Be kind to them, and talk to them if you think they aren't sure what they (or you) are doing.
  • Singles and other rowing shells are sometimes on the dock unattended while the rower runs up to open a door, lower a rack, or make an emergency bathroom run.... and wake can really damage those boats too.  Use caution when passing rowing clubs.
Happy spring everyone.  Now keep your eyes open and watch out for the boats around you.

Sorry for the late notice this week.  Super busy at work, and will be for the next 3 or 4 weeks.  So feel free to remind me when you don't get a CRAB update by Thursday.
Real quick - we have had a few close calls with visiting crews using wrong arches, and some more novice crews doing things that novice crews do.  I haven't been able to address them individually.  Please, everyone make sure that everyone launching from your house understands the basics of the traffic pattern AND the current construction situation at Anderson and Longfellow.  And if you see someone doing something wrong, take the time to politely let them know.  Communication is the key.  It takes a village, people.  Thanks for being part of it.

First, a few quick reminders:

If you are hosting a crew visiting the River, whether for college racing, a run down the HOCR course, or for a poker run, please take the time to prep visitors for the Charles River boating environment.  We are far busier than most other bodies of water, and even when you warn folks, evidence would suggest that they don't really take it to heart.  Please make sure that they understand the consequences of not using caution and following the established traffic pattern.  College crews (and club's that host visiting crews) are especially asked to take care with this task.

We'd also like to remind folks to please, be aware of your surroundings.  The good folks of Cambridge Boat Club were thankfully aware this morning, and spotted an individual in need of their help.  Hats off to them for taking the time to lend a hand.  But in years past, other incidents including some lewd behavior has taken place on the banks, and boat clubs have been robbed.  Please keep your eyes open.  Get a waterproof case for your cellphone so that you can alert the authorities should you witness something take place.  We all like to be able to focus on our water time, but sometimes, we have to put that aside and help.
