Lots of Sailing and a head race this weekend. PLEASE READ!

CRAB.  Be advised that it is a busy weekend in the Basin and beyond.

2 BIG sailing events, both Saturday and Sunday, between Longfellow and Mass Ave.  AND, Community Boating is open for their last weekend of the season and it looks to be a nice one, so count on a good crowd from them too.

All of which prompted....

Sunday, October 29th's, Seven Sisters Regatta to move its course to start upstream of the Mass Ave Bridge and will finish right before Weeks. Racing crews will warm up  below the Mass Ave bridge but will not go beyond the MIT sailing dock. Crews will proceed through Weeks Bridge before spinning and returning to Riverside Boat Club.  Expect their racing to be done by 10:15AM.  This is a small event so they should be able to manage this well.  Thank you Simmons and Seven Sisters organizers and the Sailing folks at Community Boating, MIT, BU and Harvard for working together on this.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR EVERYONE ELSE?

Stay away.  Don't go below Mass Ave after 9AM on Saturday or Sunday, and steer clear of the Head Racing course between 9AM and 10AM on Sunday.

Hi Kate,
Naomi Walker (my lovely assistant) thought I ought to give the river community a 'heads up' on our scrimmage tomorrow. Winsor v NCDS 1:45 start - 7 fours and 4 eights.
thanks!
Lisa

Join us for the Head of the Q!

Please come down and join us for the Head of the Quinnobequin Regatta this Sunday starting at Noon.  The race runs from Eliot Bridge to the North Beacon St. Bridge and awards to follow at Community Rowing.  This one of a kind event puts hundreds of kids in singles, some participants have been as young as 11(!), and will restore your faith in the future of the world because they are very aware of their steering, handle the warmup whirlpool really well, sort them selves out for the start and race really hard.  It is a fantastic event to watch!

A few things of note:
-the warm up is a sight to behold.  Hundreds of kids looping in singles, so be sure to check out above Anderson Bridge for some interesting viewing.
-Eliot Bridge makes for great viewing of the Start, as does the new park at Hells Half Acre on the Cambridge side and Herter Park on the Boston side.
-the North Beacon St. Bridge is also good viewing, as is the little parking area on Watertown's Little Greenough Blvd.

We run this event late in the season and late in the day because it is not conducive to having other boats on the water with it.  We try to give these kids the run of the river as it is the first sculling race for many of them, and as you know, the Charles has its twists and turns.  We have many safety launches out there and State Police support as well.  But if you are a boater, please plan to avoid the North Beacon to Eliot Stretch from Noon to 1pm, but also use extra serious caution from 11AM to 3pm (kids may be rowing back to other clubs after the awards).

We also have some elected officials with districts that touch our segment of the Charles (Watertown Sq. to the Harbor) joining us for the awards cenermony, so come down and shake their hands and let them know about the boaters in their districts.

Thanks everyone.

Traffic Pattern Alert! Eliot Turn Buoys going in!

On Tuesday, October 3, 2017, expect to see buoys go in on the Eliot turn.  This is done in an effort to keep river traffic separated while folks are training for the Head of the Charles Regatta - especially those out of towners that come in to practice and are not as concientious about keeping to the right side of the river as our own rowers (ahem!).  Early morning rowers (aka Vampire rowers) and all pre-sunrise rowers need to keep a sharp eye for thes buoys on Wednesday and moving forward.

The buoys tend to be placed so as to allow power boats to continue to use the channel, so keep your eyes peeled for motor boats too.

Please keep in mind that today is not race day, and regular Charles River rowing rules apply when practing your Head of the Charles piece.  please see the rules that your club has agreed to abide by at www.CharlesRiverAllianceofBoaters.org and look on the rowing page.

Reminders!
-The center arches of the Powerhouse are upstream only for rowers until Thanksgiving.  Powerboats continue to use them bi-directionally so please say to the right and don't cross the center line of the river when using them.
-When heading downstream through Weeks, please make sure you or your crews are hugging the Boston shore and that you start your turn BEFORE the bridge.  Please give this turn your special attention.
-When heading downstream on the Eliot Turn, please make sure that you or you or your crews are hugging the Boston shor, and that your coaching launches stay close to your crews.

Thanks to the Head of the Charles for their committement to communicating the buoy info to the River community and for working with the power boaters on this too.  See Brendan's note below and his contact info if you have questions.

Yours in fall boating safety,

Kate

Extremely sorry for the late notice, but the Rowing Committee at UBC wants me to put on the UBC Stake Race this weekend, before the Kevins start in earnest and HOCR is upon us. The plan was to run it from about 7:15-7:45 (15' earlier if possible) and set up two buoys, marking an approximately 90 degree stake turn into lane 6 on the 2k course and 300ish degree turn back towards Union. I'd have a launch set up by the upstream buoy for safety and to alert any crews headed downstream. The course is roughly shown on the flyer attached.

Let me know if there are any problems. I've already gotten in touch with Judith regarding the HPG practice timing. I want to try to contact Greg Myhr, Jeff, and Nik about their practices as well.

Thanks,
Dave

Charles River Clean Up Boat - Update 17-3

I am a little late with this update, but this has been a tough year.  Gradually I am getting better.  One more test, and if it is OK, I will go on a monitoring regimen.
My wife, Mary had successful surgery, but the chemo did not work.  She is now on alternative treatment, and we won't know if it is working until the third week of September.

Yet, with me being nearly dysfunctional for the Spring, and most of the Summer, the Clean Up Boat has not missed a beat.  The captains, Mitch Lunin, Jim Jadul, Tom Soisson and Bob Gaffney, have been great.  Jim led the effort to get the new motor installed and to launch the boat on time.  He has also replace the prop twice, and we have not missed a day of operating for any reason, but weather.

Nancy and Amy have kept the schedule correct.   The volunteers have been outstanding.  They are on time, enthusiastic, and great to spend the day with.  The schedule was full around the first of August, as has been the case the last few years.

The Spring rains caused us to loose a few days, but we have been able to keep the Charles virtually free of floating trash and marine debris. We as a group are awesome, one goes down and the gap is quickly filled.  I expect the Pats will do the same thing with the loss of Eddleman for the year.

We seem to excel in all areas of operation, except fund raising.  Again, we are struggling.  One way, or another, we will make it, Cindy Brown is working on a fund raiser for the October time frame, and Deb Howe and Mike Bello are trying to find new donors.  Most of the people who donated in 2016 have again donated this year.  I expect some will still donate in 2017.

I made my 2nd trip down the river last Thursday.  Never in my 14 years of cleaning the Charles have I seen it so clean.  We searched all of the dirties spots and got less than 1/2 bag.  On the way back I could feel a great deal of pride in what we, as a group, have accomplished.

We get a lot of weird stuff from the river.  Most of which I do not consider a big deal.  But a couple of week ago, Jim and his crew capture a 4' tall, very colorful chicken.  I cannot resist attaching a photo.  No, I don't know where it came from or where it was going.

There is a nip in the air today, so fall is coming and you should take a break and enjoy our beautiful river.  Go for a sail, row, paddle, or just take a jog or walk.
No other city in the world has a metropolitan river like ours for all to enjoy.

Tom

CRAB

Rowers!  Labor Day (this coming Monday) marks the beginning of the fall traffic pattern change for the Powerhouse Stretch.  Starting MONDAY, the center arches of River St. and Western Ave. bridges become UPSTREAM ONLY, 24 hours a day (we removed the 5am to 1pm only designation previously in place with a traffic pattern amendment vote this past winter).

Please keep in mind that that today (no matter what day it is other than October 21-22) is NOT race day and it is NOT OK to row over the centerline of the river.  This traffic pattern change reflects that we know that alot of people will be doing race pieces and we feel it is more safe to have a buffer between on-coming traffic.  But it doesn't mean that you get more of the river when you're heading upstream.  Better yet, keep to the righthand third of the river.  Take the shore arches if you don't have to pass a slower boat already using them.

Please do not mistake this change as any recognition that race pieces are more important that whatever anyone else is doing.  We all have to share the river whether you are racing or not.  Share it like your mom is watching.

Please also keep in mind that the Power boats, particularly the larger ones, need to stay in the channel.  They will be using the center arches bi-directionally.  You still need to keep your eyes peeled for them and make sure that you are out of their way, even when you're doing a race piece.

The center arches in the Powerhouse (thats River and Western ONLY) will go back to bi-directional on Thanksgiving.

Safety First people.
