Pretty quiet on the Charles river until July, except for ongoing Bridge work and the tons of kids camps, summer college rowers, youth programs, canoe and kayak rentals, paddle boarders, Community Boating Jr. program, and folks training for Nationals, Worlds, and everything in between.
Anderson:  Center Arch should now be closed due to some issues that needed to be addressed immediately.  Boston and Cambridge arches should be open.  Powerboaters are most likley to use the Boston Arch but you never know about the ramp users, so everyone use caution.

Longfellow:  Lots of work.  Don't go through it of you don't have to.  If you do have to, be sure to use a marked channel.

All powerboaters and coaches are reminded - NO WAKE around construction barges, please.

July 12:  All Day starting around 7AM.  Cromwell Cup Regatta in the Powerhouse Stretch (Weeks to Magazine Beach).  Lots of racing.  Powerboaters are asked to work with race officials and wait for a scheduled break in racing to traverse the course.  This race attracts a wide range of skills and ages.

July 19:  8AM to 10AM.  One Mile Swim in the Basin.  Course unclear but all boaters should keep their eyes open for buoys and safety boats and steer clear of the action.

Fw: Anderson Memorial Bridge

The demolition sub-contractor is having some mechanical issues with their hoe ram and will not complete the demolition of the Cambridge side barrel today.  The Boston and center barrels will remain open on Thursday.  I will keep you posted on when they will be making the move to the center barrel pending the repairs to the equipment.
Sorry for any inconvenience,

(CRAB) This Weekend and beyond, on the Charles.

CRAB

The river is heating up with camps starting up and Junior programs expanding to morning, noon and nightime rowing.  Club rowers are racing, Canoe Kayakers and Paddle Boarders are meandering, Sailing is in full swing and Powerboaters are starting their engines.  Welcome to summer on the Charles.  Pack your patience and your common sense.

SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 2015
7:00AM -5:00PM Dragon Boat Festival, MIT course!
Racing on the last 500 of the 2k course (MIT Boathouse to Finish line, near the HYATT).  63 boats, lots of racing.  All other boaters are asked to steer clear of this event.

7:30AM - 8:45AM, Jim Hanley Memorial row and Potluck Breakfast.

Row starts at Riverside Boat club, to the Head of the Charles Start (BU Boathouse) to Newell Boathouse (upstream of Anderson Bridge) and back to Riverside, followed by potluck Breakfast.  All are welcome, just bring a dish and your favorite Jim Hanley story to share.  All other boaters are asked to steer clear of this event.  Riverside participants are asked to NOT que up below the BU Bridge to avoid interference with Dragon Boat event.

SUNDAY, JUNE 14, 2015
7:00AM to 5:00PM  Dragon Boat Festival, Powerhouse Course!
Racing on the top part of the Powerhouse, from Western to Weeks Bridges.  63 boats, lots of racing.  Watch out for event docks extending from the downstream side of Weeks on the Boston Shore.

Sunday, July 12, 2015
7:00AM to 6:00PM  Cromwell Cup Regatta, Powerhouse Course
Running downstream from Weeks Bridge to Magazine Beach for 1000M of racing.  Jam packed schedule with novice through really-frickin-fast boats.  Powerboaters are asked to follow the instructions of the race officials who will ask you to wait for scheduled breaks in racing to traverse the course.  Canoe/Kayaks/Paddleboards are asked to avoid this stretch of river.

Sunday, July 19, 2015
8:00AM, Charles River One Mile Swim.

One Mile course from a dock by the Esplanade.  Not sure of the course, but all boaters need to take care and follow the instructions of race officials and safety boats.

Construction Updates

Not much to update:
Longfellow Bridge.  Avoid it if you can due to heavy construction.  The roadway will be periodically shut down in the upcoming weeks as well.  If you have to go through this bridge, follow the markers and use caution.  Powerboaters and coaches are reminded that wake create a dangerous work envirnment for construction crews on the barges.  No Wake Please!
Anderson Bridge.  Cambridge Arch remains closed so upstream rowing traffic uses the center arch, downstream uses the Boston Arch.  Powerboaters use the center arch in both directions.  No wake please!  All boats use caution.

OK sports fans, a few events coming up to incorporate into your planning. Please share with others in your organizations.
Wednesday, June 10, 2015
6:00-8:00PM. Annual Perkins School for the Blind Cruise out of Watertown Yach Club
. 20+ powerboats will carry kids and adults from the Perkins School for a cruise downriver to the Mass Ave Bridge and back. A line of 20 boats causes a significant string of wake even at low speed, and these guys will be carrying more guests than usual. Bottom line, this will be a very choppy day for rowers and kayakers. If you're not up for the challenge, make other plans.

Saturday, June 13, 2015
7:30 - 8:30AM. Jim Hanley Memorial Row and Pot Luck Breakfast at Riverside Boat Club.
Launching from Riverside, down to the HOCR start line (below the BU Boathouses), row up to Newell Boathouse (above Anderson Bridge) and back to Riverside.
Expect a LARGE number of boats to participate in this memorial event in honor of Jim Hanely, former President, longtime member, all time great. All boaters are welcome to participate in this event to celebrate Jim's life by doing what Jim loved - rowing and socializing. Just bring a dish and a story to share over breakfast. Other boaters are asked to give way to what will surely be a large number of boats of varying speed. Memorial row participants are asked to stay clear of Dragonboat event running out of MIT.

9:00AM - 5:00PM? Dragon Boat Festival. On the 2k course between Mass Ave and BU Bridges, likely using the 3rd 500M in front of MIT's Pierce Boathouse. Lots of Boats. Racing all day.

Sunday, June 14, 2015
9:00AM - 5:00PM? Dragon Boat Festival.
Top part of the Powerhouse Course, between Western Ave and Weeks Bridges. Lots of Boats. Racing all day. Watch out for temporary docks placed just downstream of Weeks.

Sunday, July 12, 2015
Cromwell Cup Regatta. All Day starting at 7:30AM and lasting through 5:30pm on the Powerhouse Course
(Weeks Bridge to Magazine Beach), launching from Riverside Boat Club. Jam packed day of racing with lots and lots of boats. Powerboaters are asked to pack your patience while waiting for scheduled breaks in racing for you to travel the course and follow the instructions of the race officials. Kayakers/paddleboarders should avoide this area if at all possible.

Sunday, July 19, 2015
8:00AM Charles River One Mile Swim.
(listed as Sunday, June 19 in the email but July 19 on the website) Postponed from June 6, this event takes place in the Lower Basin (between Longfellow and Mass Ave). We're unsure of the course but it should be well marked with buoys and safety boats. Sailors, rowers, canoe/kayakers should steer clear and follow the instructions of race officials if in the area.

Bridge Construction

Longfellow Bridge. Lots of barges and boats. Follow the markers to use appropriate arch or better yet, turn around if you don't have to go through it.
Anderson Bridge. Cambridge Arch is closed, Center arch should be used by rowers as upstream only. Powerboaters will use the center arch in both directions. The State does not always alert us to changes in arch closings, so if you see something, say something! send a note to CharlesRiverAllianceofBoaters@gm ail.com. The boat you save may be someone you know.

The Watertown Yacht Club is hosting a Best Buddies Cruise tomorrow, Wednesday June 3'rd.
There will be about ten boats heading downriver between 5:30 and 6:30 pm and then back upriver between 7 and 8 pm.  This is in addition to the Perkins School cruise next Wednesday June 10'th.
