Seriously folks...sunday especially consider a stadium.  If you must row beware of silent fishing boats lurking under bridges and tons of paddlers racing from the Watertown dam (actually from well above there but dor our ourposes...)to Herter Park and from Herter Park to the BU bridge.  Seriously it's a madhouse out there.

CRAB Very, very busy weekend out there - both days!! Might be a good weekend for a hike, a run or some stadiums..... Saturday 7 -11am College racing in the basin on the 2k course (between Longfellow and BU bridges) 8:30 -10am High School JV, probably racing in the Powerhouse (Weeks bridge past Powderhouse at Magazine Beach  10 -11am High School girls, probably racing in the Powerhouse  11-12 noon High School boys -Ducey Cup 12-1pm High School JV, probably Powerhouse also Sunday Bass Fishing Tournament - Launch from CRI/Public boat ramp 4:30 -6:30am, fish all day all over river, ends 3:30pm Run of the Charles paddling races 8am - 3pm, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards all over the river! 8:30 -10am College racing in the basin on the 2k course So very busy, please be careful!!  especially Sunday as the river hosts paddlers and powerboats who may not know the river or it's rules and won't be on the lookout for you!

A quick followup from the last "Miss Manner" Email.  If you haven't read it, please scoll down and do so now.  When I send these out, it is usually because I've gotten a series of emails about things that have happened.  I often address them with individual crews but sometimes I don't have time, or the crew wasnt' identified or I got ALOT of comments about the same type of behavior from several people.  So read that email again, and here are a rew more:

Coaches are people too.

  So when I say that you shouldn't yell at kids and save your harsh words for the coaches, I don't mean that you should yell at them.  Talk to them.  I've had really good luck with that.  You would too.

Rowing is a water sport.

  We all know this, and in fact, we should all remember that when you're in a boat that is more narrow than your hips, a mere few inches above the water, you are going to get wet from time to time.  That said, it is mighty cold to be wearing a boat load of water on your back.  Coaches, particularly those in non-wakeless lauches, please be kind and watch your wake.

How wide is it?

  Not very.  Folks, if you're going to be running several boats across (like, more than 2) above the BU Bridge, make sure that you have many eyes on what is going on around you.  Help the folks that are trying to pass you, or not get run over by you.  Sorry, but that is part of the job.  And as for stopping several boats across?  Don't do it.  pull over single file.  Is it inconvenient?  Yes.  Is it necessary?  yes!

Thats right folks.  There really isn't room for 3 boats across anywhere above the BU bridge unless all 3 of the cox'ns or bow persons are really really really good at close quarters and you have more than one coach looking out for oncoming traffic.  And even then....   And the 2k race course really isn't more than 6 lanes wide.  Think you can squeeze in 12 because some of them drop behind? Sure you can.  Except some of the slower crew don't like to row in wake from the faster crew and they move over....into oncoming traffic.  Bottom line...think safety first. The River is a fish bowl. Thats right, there are no secrets on this River.  Think no one will find out that you had an altercation with another crew?  Perhaps you 'exchanged pleasantries' over a traffic dispute.  Perhaps you swapped a little blade paint with another double trying to squeeze through the same arch.  Maybe you hit another boat but don't think that there was any damage.... it all gets talked about.  I cannot tell you how many calls I get in a season about things like this.  Do yourself a favor and make sure that you conduct yourself in a way that you won't be ashamed of when your club captain asks you about it.  Think you were in the right?  ok, but ask yourself if you handled it the best way possible and then give your captain a summary including what you could have done better.  And finally, if there was any contact at all, make sure that your captain hears about it from you before they hear about it from me or another club.  It goes better for everyone that way.  So three cheers for common sense and lets all have a safe rowing season.

CRAB OK folks, this one has to be quick and not at all fancy.  Want a more complete notice of what is going on?  Then step up and take this over for me!  I'm short on time at least until July. Saturday, 7:40am - 10:20am.  College Racing in the basin on the 2k course (between Longfellow and BU Bridges). 2:30pm - High School girls, probably racing in the Powerhouse (Weeks Bridge to past the powederhouse at Magazine Beach). 3:30PM - Varsity boys race the Mayors Cup, probably the Powerhouse (Weeks Bridge to past the powderhouse at Magazine Beach). 4:30 - 6pm, more high school boys, also likely in the Powerhouse (Weeks Bridge to past the powderhouse at Magazine Beach). Sunday Riverside's Crusher Casey Regatta.  Flights of eights followed by singles followed by more eights.  This is a stake race, from Riverside to Newell boathouse and back.  Big bragging rights on the line.  Please watch for boats racing and also, boats turning the stake.  Tricky stuff.   And thanks to all of you who sent me the college crew racing calendar, and also to the person who added saturday's college racing on the CRAB calendar.  I have no time at all to update the CRAB calendar with the info, so if someone could take that on, it would be really helpful for CRAB and everyone else who looks at that calendar to see what is going on. By the way, the river is getting busier.  We've already had a collission on a nearly empty river, so please folks, keep your eyes open and look around. Thanks everyone.
