Hello Sports Fans!  The River is heating up with College and High School racing this weekend.
Saturday, April 2, 2016

7AM to 11AM - College racing on the 2k course (start line above Longfellow to finish line below the BU Boathouse).  Radcliffe v. Brown, Dartmouth (5 races).  Radcliffe Ltwt v. 11:00AM-5:00PM, Sailing Races, taking place on courses on BOTH upstream and downstream sides of the Mass Ave Bridge.  The courses must be clear of other boats by 11AM firm to accomodate LOTS of racing.

1:30PM, Brookline HS v. Boston Latin, on the Powerhouse (Weeks Bridge to past the powder magazine at Magazine Beach).

Sunday, April 3, 2018

8:30AM - 9:30AM.  College racing on the 2k course (start line above Longfellow Bridge to finish line below teh BU Boathouse).  Wellesley v. Smith, UNH, Simmons (4 races).
10:00AM - 3:00PM.  Sailing races on courses both upstream AND downstream of the Mass Ave Bridge.  The courses must be clear of other boats by 10:00AM firm to accomodate LOTS of racing.

Heads up! Event coming

Sunday, April 10th.  Riverside's Crusher Casey Stake Race - Eights Race going off the line at 9:45AM and the Singles going off at 9:55AM.  This should avoide the college racing traffic, but college coaches, please note this on your calendars and watch out for big and small boats rounding a stake at "high" speed.  The race course is either Riverside to Mass Ave and back, or Riverside to Newell Boathouse and back, weather depending.
Steve "Crusher" Casey was a wrestler, boxer and rower that was nationally ranked in Ireland, England and the USA.  Originally from Sneem, Kerry, Ireland, he and 2 of his 6 siblings were members of Riverside Boat Club where they were instrumental in bringing local and national attention to the sport in the 1930's and 1940's.  Riverside honors his athletic prowess with a stake race each spring where the male and female winner get their name engraved on a trophy in the shape of a wrestling belt.  Cox'ns of the winning eight get their name engraved on a plaque that includes a London Policeman's "Bobby" hat, a gift to the club from Steve Casey's great nephew.  In the event of a tie, the organizers threaten to settle with one of the other sporting disciplines.  Spectators are welcome.

Hello Sports fans!!  Formal racing is up and running.  Please be sure to be aware of what is happening before you venture out.  Powerboaters are encouraged to check out the Powerboating page on the CRAB website to get some helpful tips for navigating around rowing shells and sail boats.  Rowers should check out their page as well to figure out how to recognize a sailing race and how to avoid ending up in the wrong place.
Everyone is encouraged to review the traffic pattern and remember that the rowing traffic pattern is NOT the pattern that the Power Boaters use...it is the traffic pattern that the rowers use to more safety organize themselves.  It is more restrictive than Coast Guard regulations.  Powerboaters follow the Coast Guard Regs which allows them to use arches in different ways.  For example, rowers use the center arch at Weeks as upstream only to avoid head on collissions on a tricky corner - but Power Boaters have to use that arch bi-directionally.  Courtesy is always the best option when dealing with other boats.  So lets brush up on our information, commit to best behavior and have a safe season.

1. Racing!!!

Colleges and boathouses that allow them to launch, please make sure that your visitors understand the traffic pattern.  It takes a village to educate a visitor.
SATURDAY, MARCH 26TH

7:20AM-11:00AM - Beanpot racing, MIT lightweight Men, Simmons v. Merrimack, MIT Men and Women v. Coast Guard.
11:00AM to 5:00PM - Sailing Racing (either between Longfellow and Mass Ave, or Mass Ave and BU Bridges).

SUNDAY, MARCH 27TH
10:00am to 3:15PM - Sailing Racing (either between Longfellow and Mass Ave, or Mass Ave and BU Bridges)

2. Events to Keep in Mind

April 24th - the Run of the Charles.  Very busy event.  Folks should plan to be off the river early....
April 30th - the Charles River Cleanup
May 7 - MIT crossing the Charles - to commemorate MIT's historic move from Boston to Cambridge, they will cross by land and water (Grand Marshall Oliver Smoot '62!!).
We need help from a Sailor!  If someone in the sailing community wants to send me details on their races (like in which section of the river they are happening, and maybe the participants, I'll happily include it.

Sailors need help from everyone else.  Folks are cautioned to remember that even when there aren't sailing races, there are still plenty of sailors practicing.

Dredging Complete - the River is open but USE CAUTION

All,

The dredging is complete and equipment is no longer blocking the river.  However, they are still removing it from the river, so if you MUST row between Eliot and North Beacon, keep your eyes open and stay out from shore (which of course means that you also need to look for boats coming at you doing the same thing).

Or, play it safe and stay out of that area if you can, and give them a few more days to clear out.
