October 14 HEADS UP, particularly for power boaters.

PLEASE SHARE WITH YOUR MEMBERSHIPS, ESPECIALLY NEWTON AND WATERTOWN YACHT CLUBS.

Race Course:  Eliot Bridge (near BB&N School) to North Beacon St. Bridge.
Race time:  Noon to roughly 1pm.  Might be faster, might be slower, depending on how young and/or inexperienced some of the rowers are.

the Head of the Quinnobequinn is a youth (kids 18 and under, and as young as 10 years old), in singles.  This means that they are alone in the boat, steering a tricky course with obstacles to avoid, and having to execute their race strategy with no motivation or help from other rowers or a cox'n.  These boats are also very tippy and require skill and concentration.  All that said, this is a fantastic race with some really quality rowing and it provides great experience for these kids.  We put many coaching launches on the course to keep an eye on everything and to lend a hand to kids that need it.  Our goal is to give these kids the best racing experience possible.

Because of this, we ask that powerboaters (all boaters, too) avoid the race course for the duration of the race.  So please plan to be below Eliot bridge PRIOR to Noon, or wait well above North Beacon St. until the last rower crosses the finish line (and they may be well back from the pack, so please be patient).  We know that really impacts Watertown and Newton Yacht Clubs, and powerboaters wishing to use the powerboat ramp and we really appreciate your help and cooperation.  Please adjust your plans accordingly.

We also understand that this, in some years, impacts the canoe and kayal rental, and we appreciate your willingness to work around the event.    Hopefully this year, with a later date, is less of a burden on you.

Thanks everyone!  It is a truly wonderful event and it could not happen without the support of the entire river community!

Charles River Dye test May 8

A message from the DCR:

Harvard University will be conducting a dye test of their drainage system on Tue  08 may which could result in discoloration of the waters of the Charles River Basin between North Harvard Street and Western Avenue.  The dye is innocuous but is colored a bright green/yellow.  Testing is expected to occur between 7:00 am and 2:00 pm.

Best,

Aleks Zosuls

Happy supposed-to-be-spring!  Predicting snow for tomorrow.  Enough already, am I right?

The miserable weather has not deterred many of you intrepid souls from getting your work done.  Good for you!  But, apparently, we need a refresher in the traffic pattern.  I'm going to cut and past language from a few messages that I have recieved from folks recently.

1.  The traffic pattern DOES NOT PERMIT PASSING ON SHORE.  If that crew in front of you is in your way, bark at them and get them to move over.  I'm not going to say that you can't ever give a better line to another crew, but unless there is loud communication on that front, you are just reinforcing bad behavior.  And the next boat that overtaking crew encounters may not see it that way, and we may have an accident on our hands.  So... pass to the middle.  Got it?

2.  "But novices are so slow and can't get out of the way so I just go around them."  um, no.  Give a shout in advance.  and pass to the middle.  You read #1, right?  To quote one of my on-river pen pals, "Plan ahead people!  2 mistakes don't cancel each other out!"

3.  Don't turn in front of bridge arches.  Turn where the river is wide and where you have visibility.  Please.

4.  Don't drill by pairs through bridge arches when you have traffic behind.  If you're by pairs, get over to the side and try to let traffic move past you.

And on a positive note, I got a note of kudos to an unnamed NU coach who had 2 eights side by side and were in the heat of battle in the powerhouse, and were both going to use the center arch to avoid the high school boat in the right arch and the coach made them correct to move one eight into the side arch.  The high school boat heard the NU coach and scrambled a bit to make room, but that is how it is supposed to work.

Safety first everyone!  If there are new coaches our there that you think are not recievging these, please send me their emails.

This weekend on the charles

Is sure to be very busy.  Happy spring everyone.

Please bring your patience and expect the race courses (powerhouse, 2k course if it isnt windy) to be exceptionally busy.  Please keep your eyes open for boats turning at the ends of straight stretches and dont be afraid to communicate with each other.

Here you go:

Boat/Oars Donation for Rowing Development in Trinidad & Tobago

World Rowing, working with CRI-Boston, is sending a shipping container of donated equipment to the nation of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean to get that nation on the water. If you have any secondhand equipment that you'd consider donating to help, please contact Matt Lehrer at matt.lehrer@communityrowing.or g

Equipment needs include boat (except 8+'s) and oars of any size sweep or sculling. T&T is particularly interested in any wider hulls that would be appropriate for rough water. The current shipment contains:
  • 2 Vespoli 4+'s
  • 1 Alden Trainer 2x
  • 2 C2 ergs
  • 1 set 8 sweep oars
  • 2 sets sculling oars
Pickup of donated items can be arranged. Any help you can provide is much appreciated!
