Big event Saturday on the Charles and corrected fall calendar

Hey folks.  Quick note.

Red Bull High Stakes Regatta this week.  Look at all of these mighty fine details below (thanks Courtney).  Truly, this one is for the spectators.  Come watch.  The course is just downstream of Riverside and goes 250m (roughly to the Powderhouse) to a stake, and back.  long skinny boats don't turn on a dime, so bring your cameras.

corrected fall schedule below, and a reminder about the change in the Riverside dock location there too.  Read it all again.

CRAB

Folks, as you know, there was an issue with sediment build up under Anderson Bridge, likely caused by a recent water main break on the bridge, that resulted in a dangerous obstruction that damaged a few singles and acted as speed bump for many more.  While CRAB may seem all-knowing, that is only true when you tell us what is going on.  Because we got word of this hazard quickly, we were able to work with the good folks at MassDOT who responded quickly.
If you see something, say something.  Complaining on the dock does no good.

1. What does Riverside's new Dock mean for you?

As you may know, Riverside Boat Club had to replace their dock after a nasty winter that basically ripped the porch off the boathouse.  The new dock required the addition of pilings which changed the position of their dock in the river.  Why does this matter to you?  Because YOU now have to row the river a little bit differently.
  • Upstream bound folks have less room between the dock and the center line. Those of you who like to cut that corner close to dock need to take a good look, or you may find yourself beached.  Those of you who like to give Riverside a wide berth may find yourself over the center line, nose to nose with oncoming traffic.
  • Downstream bound folks also need to pay attention. Those of you who think that there is a 1000m straightaway tend to cross the center line, which has always been a bad idea, but that issue will now be exaserbated.  You need to make a course correction by the time you get to the shrubbery at the end of the retaining wall and stay more toward Boston.  Who, me?  yes, you!
  • Side by side boats need to be particularly careful of where you are and especially when without a coach.
Riverside's docks can get congested at peak times and they are stongly asking their membership to stay tucked into the shadow of the dock when waiting for a spot to land.  But safety is everyone's business so lets all get used to this change together.  If you see a problem that needs to be addressed, send a note to CharlesRiverAllianceofBoaters@gm ail.com and we'll talk to whatever program was involved.

2. Upcoming Events

 August 22, 2015
Red Bull High Stakes Regatta.  500m Race (with a stake turn at the 250m) just downstream of Riverside's docks.  This is a permitted event that will stop other boat traffic during racing.  It looks like racing will take place from Noon until 6PM, and there are some long stretches between power boat breaks.  Upstream power boaters are strongly encouraged to take a look at the race calendar found at www.regattacentral.com/regatta/i ndex.jsp?job_id=4329&org_id=0 or google RedBull High Stakes Regatta.  They are looking for volunteers too.
Fall Calendar
LABOR DAY ROWING TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGE.  Monday, September 7.  The traffic pattern in the Powerhouse changes
(*) Powerhouse Stretch / Western Ave. and River Street Bridges: This area is used heavily by crews racing side-by-side, for high school and club races, and seat racing. Racing crews and scullers have right of way in this stretch. All crews and scullers, upstream and downstream, must use the right-hand arches of both bridges, going single file if not racing. The center arches are two-way to accommodate racing, with one boat in the right-hand arch, and the other to the right-hand side of the center arch. (*) Racing crews and scullers are only allowed to use the center arches if the right hand arches are concurrently used, and preferrably with a coach. From Labor Day through Thanksgiving, from 5 am until 1 pm, the center arches of Western and River street bridges are upstream only, to accommodate crews and scullers training for the Head of the Charles regatta. In the afternoon, the center arches resume being bi-directional. April 2010 Charles River Rowing Traffic Pattern Note that both ends of the race course cross just onto the wrong side of the river. Crews turning shall proceed well into the corners at the Weeks Footbridge (Cambridge) and the Railroad Tracks (Boston), being alert for and notifying approaching crews. Coaches are urged to choose their time openings carefully and proceed expeditiously

There is a sandbar in the center of the Cambridge arch of Anderson bridge.  Proceed with caution!  You can still paddle through the arch, but stick to the Boston side.

Those of you traveling through the center arch downstream, stay closer to Boston to give more space before and after the bridge.

I do not recommend launches travel through the Cambridge arch at this time.

ALERT Riverside dock placement change

 A word from Riverside:

Heads up boaters especially you backwards facing rowers.... construction  is nearly complete on the Riverside docks. They are now positioned in a new configuration. -  and this may change your usual traffic pattern.

As you may know, a few years ago, ice build up behind the dock pushed the docks out, taking the porch with it.  Emergency repairs were made but a permanent solution, which included pilings, was needed.

The new configuration pushes the docks out further into the river. For those of you who like to cut that corner and buzz the  downstream end of the RBC dock, take a good look when rounding the turn in the upstream direction.

Riverside boats waiting to dock should hover downstream in the shadow of the dock closer to shore.  Riverside boats that need to adjust after launching should wait in the shadow of the dock on the upstream side.

Riverside asks that you alert them to any issues that you see arising from the new configuration.

Also, power boaters please take note that the Red Bull event next Saturday will have State Police/Ranger detail and will ask powerboaters to hold for races.  More details to come.

Quiet days as much of the Rowers are away at Canadian Henley.  Bridge Work continues at Anderson and Longfellow (apparently that Longfellow work has been extended for a few more years....)

and dock work also continues in a few locations:
Northeastern U.  Keep your eyes open for a barge assisting with this work.

Riverside Boat Club.  New docks going in soon.  During construction, steer wide and keep your eyes open for long lines waiting to dock at peak times.  Also, watch for a new dock configuration appearing soon that may require adjustments to your usual course.

The Red Bull High Stakes Regatta, course is just downstream of Riverside's dock.  This is a stake race (read, boats rounding a stake), 250M each way, 500M total - just enough room for a start, turn and sprint to the finish - swim portion optional.  This may be the single greatest spectator regatta of all time for the sheer chaos of it.
