Kate,
This is just a reminder about the Columbus Day Weekend Boy Scout Event permitted by the DCR

From 1-4pm pm on  Saturday Oct. 8th, as well as 9am-4pm on Sunday Oct. 9th there will be hundreds of Boy Scouts out on the river in canoes, kayaks, and rafts in the viscinity of our docks.

My advice to rowers would be to try to avoid this area.

If you are reading this, you appreciate the work that CRAB members do....providing the schedule of the river so that you know what is going on with bridge construction, river events and issues.  Of course, there is much more that goes on in CRAB, and most of it impacts you directly.  If you appreciate CRAB, show some love by learning more about the CRAB/MIT Sea Grant Charting Project, and contribute a small (or large) amount to fund the completion of the project.  You can find it at https://igg.me/at/CRAB-chart

Hi Everyone,

As many of you may know Boston College High School rows out the Esplanade/Hatch Shell Lagoon. This fall we have had some growth in our team size and I'd like to communicate with everyone regarding our plan to  manage our squad in the lower basin.

Each day, in order to accommodate the sailers at CBI, we launch through the cut between the islands in front of Union Boat Club/Community Boating, and have boats either proceed across the river to the 2k start or head directly to the Science Center (we may use the Union Lane if conditions merit). We also return through the upstream end of the lagoon, normally via the Union Lane.

We are generally on the water daily from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m., Saturdays, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, however, we will also have a group of 7th and 8th graders rowing in the area below the Longfellow Bridge (2–3 Eights). All of our blades are white with a maroon and gold stripe at the tip.

Safety is paramount, yet we recognize the reality of adolescents sometimes erring in judgement. If at anytime you witness one of our crews, or coaches, putting themselves or others at risk, please feel free to contact me.

All the best and hope you enjoy your time on the water!

I spied a light on under Anderson Bridge today.  The new arch lighting has been installed, and I didn't see it in the pitch black this morning, but as I paddled back, one of the 6 rows of lights was on, making that center arch much easier to see.  Vampire rowers rejoice, there is a light to help guide the way! Hopefully they will all be lit soon and that project will be completed.

Contents

  1. Upcoming events!
  2. And now, a request, just for you.....

1. Upcoming events!

Friday, September 23, 2016
5:30PM to 8:30PM, Community Boating's Friday Night Informal Racing.  (between Longfellow and Mass Ave Bridges), Lots of boats, wide range of skills.  Stay back.
Saturday, September 24, 2016
7AM to 8:30AM, Heads of the Kevin II, (Head of the Charles Course, BU Boathouse to about 10 strokes past the wooden boardwalk at Herter Park).  Informal yet deadly serious time trial.  Organizers try to be quick and efficient and leave the river to everyone else.  Please, no jumping in without permission from Kevin himself... it screws up the timing if they are not expecting you.
Sunday, September 25, 2016
9:30AM to 2:30PM, Community Boating's Tiller Club's Formal Racing.  (between Longfellow and Mass Ave Bridges), Fewer boats, stronger skills...stay back.

2. And now, a request, just for you.....

  • If you have appreciated knowing about bridge construction, closing bridge arches, various events and traffic issues on the river
  • If you have appreciated others knowing about these things even more;
  • If you have appreciated the much improved relationship between rowers, powerboaters, sailors, canoe/kayers and dragon boaters;
  • If you had an incident that you wanted brought to someone's attention, but didn't want to make the call yourself and CRAB did it for you;
  • If you are thankfull that the sand bar was finally dredged;
  • If you are interested in keeping the Charles River a healthy environment for wildlife;
  • If you are interested in keeping the Charles River safe for recreational boating
Then PLEASE, go to https://igg.me/at/CRAB-chart and learn about the CRAB/MIT Sea Grant Program charting project, and make a donation of some kind.  If you value the work that the CRAB volunteers do for you, including the time that they take off of work to attend meetings and build relationships with each other and with State officials, then show your appreciation with a contribution of whatever you can afford.  No amount is too small!
We are fortunate that many organizations and boathouses stepped up to get this project started.  Please help us finish it.

ALERT! 2 Important Issues to know about TODAY!

See the note below from the State regarding closing the the Boston arch of Anderson bridge tomorrow, and reopening the center arch.  As you know, this requires a traffic pattern change, and at a bad time of year.  Please, rowers, please comply with the change in traffic pattern until the Boston arch re-opens (meaning, you can't row the Head of the Charles course at that bridge).  Specifically, please help by

  • using the center arch as downstream only, and the cambridge arch for all upstream traffic even during practice pieces, Heads of the Kevin, etc.
  • post signs, send emails and do anything else you need to do to proactively warn all visitors launcing from your docks that they need to use the cambridge arch heading upstream until the Boston arch reopens.
  • using extreme caution (read: no pressure) and check to be sure no one is coming towards you when heading downstream through the center arch - just in case someone doesn't get the message

Please, everyone make sure that we're all on the same page.

Second item of note - we hear that safety buoys will be going in today or tomorrow (weather pending) on the Eliot turn to help keep upsteam and downstream traffic separated.  Please note that these are placed for safety, not to mirror the race day course.  They are also placed to not present a problem for the power boaters.

Safety first.

TREE DOWN!
There is a tree down, across a good chunk of the river, just below the No. Beacon Street Bridge.  We lose a sandbar and gain another obstacle.  Please use serious caution in both directions.

GOT GUESTS?
If you have guests launching from your docks to row the course this fall, please make sure that they understand the actual traffic pattern of the river, and also the ever changing situation at Anderson bridge.  Included in this should be that the faster boat does not have right of way on a regular day...race rules don't apply.  And please encourage them to not cut the corners.  Visitors are very likely not aware of just how busy this river is on any given day, so please help them to understand before they find out the hard way.

Upcoming Calendar

Thursday, September 15, 2016
Per the previous email from the state, the Center Arch of Anderson Bridge will close, and the Cambridge Arch will re-open.

Friday, September 16, 2016
5:30pm to 8:30pm - Community Boating's Friday Nite Informal Racing.  (Between Longfellow and Mass Ave Bridges)  Lots of fun, less so it you are on the course and not racing.  Please steer clear.
Saturday, September 17, 2016
9:00AM to 2:00PM - Community Rowing's Fall Classic Regatta. (Eliot Bridget to CRI).  Buoyed course.  If you're doing a Head of the Charles piece, please get'r done well before 9AM.  Power Boaters and Canoe/Kayak folks might want to speak directly to race organizers.
Sunday, September 18, 2016
9:30AM to 2:30PM.  Community Boating's Tiller Club's Sunday Morning Formal Racing (between Longfellow and Mass Abe Bridges).  Serious stuff.  Please steer clear.
4:00PM, CRAB ICE CREAM SOCIAL (at Community Boating, behind the Hatch Shell).  Please join us for a little socializing and a preview of the CRAB/MIT Sea Grant Program Charting Project which has measured the depth and hardness of nearly the entire Charles River between the harbor and Newton Yacht Club.  Cool stuff.  The event is free but please, whether you come or not, go to  https://igg.me/at/CRAB-chart  to learn more and to make a donation to support this worthwhile project.
Future Fall Dates of Interest:
Saturday, September 24, 2016
7:00AM to 8:15AM - Heads of the Kevin II on the Head of the Charles course (BU Rowing Boathouse to about 10 strokes past the wooden boardwalk at Herter Park).  This best 2 out of 3 informal series is quite serious.  Please adjust your schedules to avoid.

Sunday, October 2, 2016
11:00AM to Noon.  The Greater Boston Youth Rowing Head Race, Mass Ave Bridge to Anderson Bridge.  BC High v. CRI

Sunday, October 9, 2016
9AM to 5PM, HUGE Boy Scout Canoeing event at Herter Park.  Rowerd DO NOT want to try to row through this event and power boaters should use extreme caution.
Saturday, October 15, 2016
7AM to 8:30AM - Heads of the Kevin III.  Same info as above.  Tends to be a bit larger so give this one a little more time to clear the course.

Sunday, October 16, 2016
Noon to 1:30PM - Head of the Quinnobequin Youth Singles Regatta (Eliot Bridge to North Beacon St. Bridge).  Expect swarms of singles staging between Anderson and Eliot prior to the event.  With competitors as young as 11, all other boaters are asked to keep the course and staging area clear from 11:30am to 1:30PM, and also expect singles launching from lots of clubs on the river.  Your cooperation is greatly appreciated, and spectating is encouraged.

October 22 and 23, 2016
Head of the Charles Regatta!!!!!
Looking for Foot of the Charles dates if someone could post them and the course to be used.  Thanks!!!

As the power boaters and canoe kayakers wind down a little bit, the river heats up again with college rowers and sailors, and visitors training for the Head of the Charles Regatta.  Rowers are asked to sharpen your traffic pattern knowledge with a quick read at www.CharlesRiverAllianceofBoater s.org under the rowing page.
Don't forget!  The CRAB Ice Cream Social on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at Community Boating where there will be a preview of the CRAB/MIT Sea Grant Program charting project.  This is exciting stuff folks.  Come find out just how far you'll have to dive to retrieve that tiller/wrench/watch/phone/keys/s unglasses you dropped off the dock.  Please plan to stop by Community Boating to calorie load and meet your fellow boaters.  Ice cream melts, you might want to come early.

This week's events

Friday, September 9, 2016
5:30PM to 8:30PM - Community Boating's Friday Nite Informal Racing.  Between Longfellow and Mass Ave Bridges.  Give'em room people.

Sunday, September 11, 2016
7:00AM to 8:30AM - Heads of the Kevin I
(Head of the Charles start line off the docks of the BU Rowing boathouse to about 10 strokes past the wooden boardwalk at Herter Park/Artesani Playground).  Fall kicks off with a vengence with this best 2 of 3 informal, yet deadly serious series.  Folks are asked to not jump into the event without express permission (and bow card instructions) from Kevin - it screws up the timing.

9:30AM to 2:30PM - Community Boating's Till Club's Formal Racing.  Between Longfellow aand Mass Ave Bridges.  Did someone say deadly serious?  Give them room folks.
